Slavery L5 – What Happened at Slave Auctions?

This lesson contains:
A starter to study a source from a slave auction. The students discuss the prompt questions about the way enslaved people may have been perceived.
Students learn, through teacher explanation and the board prompts, about the nature of slave auctions and the process they went through. There are some discussion questions after the initial slides and students are required to summarise, in a short paragraph, what they have learned.
Two videos, with follow up discussion questions, about the what they show about the slave trade. One of the videos is from 12 Year a Slave and can be found on YouTube as directed in the notes on the slide.
A task for students to use the sources and the information on the info pages to complete their table about what each source can teach them about lave auctions. Students will also extend this by comparing the treatment with that of the Middle Passage they will have learned about previously.
A plenary to argue against statements being made by characters in a scene as a way of reiterating what they have learned from the sources.
