This lesson contains:

  • After the previous lesson on why the Americans were angry, they are given an introduction to the evolving events of the Revolution, from the founding of the Continental Congress and the battles of Lexington and Concord. This leads the students to complete a gap fill from what you have discussed.
  • A task to study the four main events that now led the Americans to want to declare independence: Patrick Henry's speech, the Continental Army, the failure of the Olive Branch and the pamphlet by Thomas Paine. The students are talked through on the board with some video extracts on YouTube from the Patriot and John Adams. They also have the information in their books to be able to complete the worksheet.
  • A task to study the terms of the Declaration of Independence. Students then complete the final questions about the intentions of the document.
  • A plenary to check their learning from the lesson.
