Crusades L6 - Why Was Outremer Almost Lost?
This lesson contains:
- A 'do it now' starter, which can be edited to suit whatever you have taught previously.
- An introduction to the word 'jihad' and a recap of the situation at that point, in the 1170's, now that Jerusalem has been in Christian hands for 70 years.
- An activity to do a mind map, in which the teacher runs through the slides and the students note down the problems in Outremer, including Baldwin's leprosy, the rise of Saladin etc. Students are then tasked with discussing whether this was the right time for a jihad to Jerusalem.
- A task to read the information sheet about the jihad itself, which covers the threat of Saladin and the eventual Battle of Hattin. Students answer questions from the board.
- A video clip from a movie (on Youtube) about the fall of Jerusalem which the students then use to complete a final question on the final outcome and the deal Saladin struck with the Christians.
- A plenary about the consequences of the fall of Jerusalem, using maps to compare the situation after 1187, and some small questions to recap.
