Crusades L7 - Was the Third Crusade a Success or a Failure?
This lesson contains:
- A 'do it now' that can be edited to suit whatever you previously taught.
- Some background slides going over the situation up to the Third Crusade, including the fall of Jerusalem and the calling, by the new Pope, of a Third Crusade.
- An introduction to the main characters of the Crusade using a map (you click through it) of where they travelled.
- An activity for students to discuss the 3 main objectives of the Crusade and discuss the main problems the Crusaders might run into on the way.
- The main activity, where students use a series of information cards to write the main events of the Crusade chronologically onto a timeline organiser. Then, students colour-code which show successes or failures for the Crusaders. The students are then able to make a judgement by comparing the results of the Crusade alongside the original goals of the Crusade and giving each objective a score out of 10 for whether the Crusaders succeeded or not.
- A plenary to consider the overall success or failure.
