Slavery L1 - What Are the Roots of Slavery?

This lesson contains:
A starter which asks students what they already know about slavery using visual prompts.
An opportunity to work with students to build a definition of slavery. There is on suggested on the board and students can write this, or their own version incorporating the key elements.
A video to give the history of slavery in Africa prior to slavery and to address misconceptions that slavery did not exist before Europeans arrived. The students complete the questions on the worksheet.
A main task to study the information on different nat8ions through history who have dealt in slaves, and to complete a table with who they captured, what the slaves did and whether they had any rights. This can lead to comparisons with the information from the video on African slavery. Teachers can address the common misconception also that slavery was a British invention or started because of Europeans.
A plenary to compare the different eras and decide how the enslaved people were treated over time.
