Slavery L4 – What Was the Middle Passage Like?

This lesson contains:
A starter to recap the previous lessons on the slave trade which can be edited to fit what you have previously taught.
A source that shows slaves being thrown overboard. This can lead to a discussion about what potential treatment the slaves might experience.
An activity which begins with a short video about the nature the Middle Passage. Once students watch it, there are discussion questions which can be done as a group or in pairs, or with the teacher at the board. The students then study a series of sources and from them, students extract the message and what it tells them about the Middle Passage, how enslaved Africans were treated and what conditions they faced.
A plenary to summarise some the students’ thoughts about what they have just learned.
