This lesson contains:

  • A starter to recap some knowledge from previous lessons, which can be easily edited to suit whatever you have previously taught.
  • A teacher led introduction to the idea of resistance with slaves and an opportunity for students to write down the definitions of 'active' and 'passive' resistance.
  • A task to study different types of resistance by enslaved Africans and to rate them as passive and active. Students will be surprised about the passive resistance but I often reiterate that they do this against teachers all the time!
  • A video to watch showing slave resistance from the 2018 Roots special. It has follow up questions as to why the rebellion failed.
  • A reading task with some real examples of rebellions including the Maroons and the Haitian rebellion. Students make notes about what happened and what form the resistance took.
  • A plenary to consider some recap questions from the lessons in a fun grid format.
