Slavery L7 - How Successful Was Slave Resistance?
This lesson contains:
- A starter to recap some knowledge from previous lessons, which can be easily edited to suit whatever you have previously taught.
- A teacher led introduction to the idea of resistance with slaves and an opportunity for students to write down the definitions of 'active' and 'passive' resistance.
- A task to study different types of resistance by enslaved Africans and to rate them as passive and active. Students will be surprised about the passive resistance but I often reiterate that they do this against teachers all the time!
- A video to watch showing slave resistance from the 2018 Roots special. It has follow up questions as to why the rebellion failed.
- A reading task with some real examples of rebellions including the Maroons and the Haitian rebellion. Students make notes about what happened and what form the resistance took.
- A plenary to consider some recap questions from the lessons in a fun grid format.
