This lesson contains:

  • An introduction on the board of Baghdad and it's location, the appearance and who build the city. Students will be able to see some images on the board of what the Round City may have looked like, and some motivations for building it.

  • An activity to stick in a copy of the city and as you go through the slides, the students annotate their copy with the different aspects, such as the gates, the thick walls, access to the river etc.

  • An introduction to the House of Wisdom, followed by a guided read where students identify the knowledge and wisdom to be found in Baghdad, from medicine, astrology, maths etc. There is also an optional activity that goes before this to study some sources and write out what they can learn. However this depends if you have time or not.

  • A plenary to see what the students learned that lesson and test it.
