This lesson contains:

  • A starter which is a 'do it now' and can be edited for whatever you previously taught.
  • An introduction to women in the Crusades by looking at images on the board and what they may show. Students then discuss why history may have only mainly told the stories of men rather than women. this is then followed by a quote from Helen J Nicholson about the role of women being less known. Students will return to this quote later to make their judgements.
  • An activity on why women were discouraged from going on Crusade. Students read the statements on the board and summarise in their books.
  • A task to then study the information sheet and complete questions on reasons the Church tried to prevent women from going on Crusade. This is extended by considering why lots of women may have ignored this advice.
  • An activity to study a series of sources on the information sheet and use it to complete a table showing evidence od the different roles women played, from healing, trading, fighting etc. The first side of the sources does the basic job, but there are additional sources on the second side which enhance and expand on this in their tables as an extension activity.
  • There is an optional extension activity to read about the difference in the roles rich and poor women played too.
  • A final part to review their knowledge from the lesson to back up the quote from Helen J Nicholson and consolidate their knowledge.
