This lesson contains:

  • An introduction to the changes in government and William’s situation after his conquest. The students use the colour-coding sheet to identify the main ways he made changes to keep control or raise money. This is excellent prep for an exam question on why he made changes to England.
  • A task to use the information to answer question about the changes to Earls and Regents, which they do from the prompts on the board.
  • A study of the changing role of the sheriffs. The students study the information and then complete a worksheet to show the major changes to their role.
  • A final task to learn about the Forest Laws. Students have a short piece to read and then some follow up questions to complete. The plenary question is often a great way to ‘plan’ an answer, rather than actually writing it.
