Saxons & Normans L6 - Claimants for the Throne
This lesson contains:
- A brief intro to the death of Edward the Confessor and how Harold immediately claimed the throne. Then gives an overview on the board of the four claimants for the throne.
- A mind map activity where students take notes from the teacher-led explanation about why there was a crisis upon Edward’s death. This includes the unclear succession rules, the lack of an heir and the poor decision making of Edward. Students make notes on their mind map.
- An information (A3) sheet that has info on all of the claimants, their motivation and strength of their claims. The students highlight on this, then write down the strengths and weaknesses of each claimant. This extended where students consider who had the strongest claim, and why.
- A brief overview of the choice of Harold as king and foreshadowing the next lesson when the invasions come.
- A plenary to recap the learning from the lesson.
