Saxons & Normans L4 – House Godwin and Harold’s Embassy

This lesson contains:
A recap about the situation with Edward the Confessor and having no heirs, while introducing Earl Godwin and his ability to have amassed huge power and wealth. The students then complete shading the maps on their worksheets to show the extent of the sons of Godwin and their earldoms.
A main task to study the reasons why the Godwinson sons were so powerful and to complete the relevant sections on the worksheet.
An overview on the board of Harold’s embassy to Normandy. The students then read the information about the event and complete questions in their books, using prompts on the board, to record the key events and opinions of the event from the Norman and Saxon perspectives.
A plenary to offer some exam practice based on the learning.
