Saxons & Normans L8 & L9 - Why Did William Win at Hastings?
This lesson contains:
- Background info that recaps the previous battles of Stamford Bridge and before that, Gate Fulford. This helps students with placing the start of the story.
- An activity which can be done on the board where the teachers go through the lead up to Hastings and the students complete the timeline table on their worksheets.
- A task to finish the worksheet by labeling the main types of troops both sides used, including cavalry and housecarls.
- A video from YouTube that provides an overview of the Battle of Hastings. The students then use an information sheet with the main events to complete an A3 organiser to show the ups and downs of both combatants, and explain, at each point, why their fortunes changed using the precise examples.
- The students then study an A3 organiser (that they can stick in their books) and highlight the major reasons why William won the battle. The information is very detailed and contains reasons why Harold also lost due this or his men's errors too, to ensure both sides of the argument can be presented.
- Multiple options are presented for you to choose based on the ability of the students to complete a 16 mark practice question. This also includes sample answers and exemplars.
